Thanksgiving is all about pilgrims and Indians, so it can be a great idea for you to find some fun pilgrim crafts for your child to create for decorations at this special time of year. The pilgrims came over to America on the Mayflower to find a new world where they didn’t have to worry about religious persecution, and creating pilgrim crafts with your child is a prime opportunity to not only spend quality time with them but also to tell them about the Thanksgiving story. Your child is never too young to know about the holidays we celebrate and why we celebrate them.
If you need some ideas for pilgrim crafts, we found many websites that have ideas for you to try. When we did a Google search for “pilgrim crafts”, we were given hundreds of web sites that are easy for children of all ages. We decided to share a couple of our favorites with you.
We found a fun pilgrim craft to make out of a toilet paper roll and an easy to download and print template. Here is the link for the template you will need to make the pilgrim: www.dltk-holidays.com
Have your child cut out the template pieces and color them. The large rectangular piece goes around the toilet paper roll. You can probably figure out where the rest of the pieces go. Have your child glue the pieces on and you will have one of several cute pilgrim crafts to decorate your house.
You can also make some fun pilgrim crafts out of a paper plate and some construction paper. This craft also lets your child experiment around with mixing paint colors. You will want to start by trying to make a flesh colored paint. Take a little bit of red and mix in 2 to 3 times more yellow and then add white until you have a flesh toned color. You may want to use this moment to ask your child what they think will happen as you add colors and see what answers they have. What a great learning moment!
After you have mixed your paint, use it to paint a regular paper plate for your pilgrim crafts face. When the plate is dry, have your child draw on a face. Make the face smiling or funny to make it extra unique. Use some black and white construction paper to make a pilgrim hat and use some yarn to make some hair. Glue it all together and you have some great pilgrim crafts faces to decorate your home!
